Compounding

Veterinary

Animals are not small people. Doses are frequently far below anything manufactured, cats will not swallow tablets, and a dog that spits out its medicine is an untreated dog. We make preparations that get taken.

Dosage forms

What we prepare.

Flavored oral suspensions
Chicken, beef, fish, liver, marshmallow, peanut butter, and more.
Chews and treats
For dogs who treat a pill as a puzzle.
Transdermal gels
Applied to the inner ear flap. The usual answer for a cat who cannot be pilled.
Capsules
At strengths no manufacturer makes, including very small ones.

Note We compound for companion animals. We do not prepare medications for animals raised for food.

Using it

How to take it.

  • Use the syringe we send. Kitchen spoons are not measuring devices.
  • Aim an oral syringe into the cheek pouch, not straight down the throat.
  • For transdermal gels, wear a glove or a finger cot and alternate ears each dose.
  • Finish the course even if the animal seems better.
Storing it

How to keep it.

  • Check the label. Many flavored suspensions are refrigerated and most have a short beyond use date.
  • Shake suspensions well before every dose.
  • Store where the animal cannot reach it. A liver flavored medicine is appealing to exactly the patient who should not have the whole bottle.

This page describes the preparations we make and how they are handled. It is not medical advice and it does not replace the label on your prescription or the instructions your prescriber gave you. Call us at 910-748-0243 with any question about your own medicine.

For prescribers

What to put on the prescription.

  • Species, and the animal's current weight.
  • The concentration you want, or the dose per kilogram and we will work it out.
  • A flavor, or tell us the species and we will pick one that usually works.
  • Whether the owner needs an oral syringe, and what size.

The order form has all of it.
