Compounding

Dermatology

Skin is where compounding earns its keep. Two or three actives that would otherwise be three separate prescriptions become one application, strengths land where you want them rather than where a manufacturer decided, and a base can be built without the dye or preservative a patient reacts to.

Using it

How to take it.

  • A thin film is the dose for most topicals. More is not faster.
  • Apply to clean, dry skin unless your prescriber said otherwise.
  • If the preparation contains a retinoid, use it at night and use sunscreen during the day.
  • Give it time. Most dermatology preparations are judged at six to twelve weeks, not at six days.
Storing it

How to keep it.

  • Several dermatology actives break down in light. If we dispense yours in an amber or opaque container, keep it there.
  • Check the label for refrigeration. Some preparations need it and some are ruined by it.
  • Close the tube or jar tightly. Air degrades these faster than anything else.

This page describes the preparations we make and how they are handled. It is not medical advice and it does not replace the label on your prescription or the instructions your prescriber gave you. Call us at 910-748-0243 with any question about your own medicine.

For prescribers

What to put on the prescription.

  • Every active with its percentage, and the base.
  • Total quantity and the treatment site, which tells us how much is realistic.
  • Any excipient to leave out.
  • Whether it is for the patient to apply at home or for you to apply in the office.

The order form has all of it.
