Pain Management

A topical puts the active ingredient into the tissue that hurts instead of sending it through the whole body first. For localized pain that often means a useful effect with far less systemic exposure, and it lets several actives be combined into one application.

For sites where a cream will not stay put.

Capsules and liquids when a manufactured strength does not fit.
Using it

How to take it.

  • Measure the dose. These creams are dispensed with a pump or a syringe because "a fingertip" is not a dose.
  • Rub it in until it is gone, then wash your hands unless the pain is in your hands.
  • Never apply to broken skin, an open wound, or a fresh surgical site unless your prescriber told you to.
  • Keep it off other people. Combination pain creams can affect anyone who touches them.
Storing it

How to keep it.

  • Room temperature.
  • Keep the cap on and the pump upright.
  • Note the beyond use date on the label. Compounded preparations do not carry a manufactured shelf life.

  • Total grams, and the sig with the amount per application.
  • Whether the patient needs a pump, a syringe, or a jar.
